A candlelight vigil held here December 18 to honor those killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Connecticut instead ignited a firestorm of controversy.
Speaking from the podium, organizer Ellen Granum made remarks critical of the National Rifle Association and in favor of gun control. A gun control petition was also circulated.

I will never attend another 'event' organized by Ellen Granum and will encourage others to similarly abstain until such time as a genuine apology is given to the community. This may seem petty, but to me her actions were disgraceful and had less to do with the victims and more to do with her own self-interest.
I'm going to say that Ms. Granum, possibly being "old-school" like many of us, addressed the problem, then tried to offer up a solution. This is the way I work also. Rather than bemoan the mistake or issue, I always try to have a solution in mind. And my solutions are pea-brained at times, but I mean well.
I find her printed apology to be sincere, and believe she attempted to address all aspects of what went wrong.
There are folks who will try to nurse their grudge along, and make it blossom and even grow legs and travel all over town.
I suggest we let this go. Surely there are other issues we can dwell on.
And when you see Ms. Granum, who I personally have never met, just tell her "Boy, Ellen, you sure jacked that one up!", share a little laugh and shake her hand.
Happy New Year! May it be a fruitful and joyful 2013 for you all!
