‘˜God has a plan for me’

Joe Buice had a bad feeling when the call about a man with an assault rifle threatening suicide sounded on the radio in his patrol car January 29. He had no way of knowing the call would nearly cost him his life. Buice, former sheriff of Lamar County, was on duty as a Spalding County deputy patrolling a crime-ridden area of North Hill Street when he heard the call. ’It just didn’t feel right. I had a gut feeling. It was out of my sector a little but I went up there,’ Buice said. Buice pulled up to a home built well off the road in a former pecan grove at about the same time as Sgt. Mike Haygood.
