By Walter GeigerHBO’s series ‘˜Sharp Objects’, large portions of which were filmed here last summer, will open the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas June 7. ATX is similar to a film festival but concentrates on new television series and television history.Opening the festival is a coup for HBO as it will draw attention to the series which will run in eight episodes, also beginning in June.Barnesville was transformed into Wind Gap, Missouri for the shoot which kept crews here for two months. The series is based on the book of the same name by Gillian Flynn who was here as an executive producer and helped write the script.’Sharp Objects’ was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who has won multiple Emmy Awards for another hit HBO series ‘˜Big little Lies’.The production tells the story of reporter Camille Preaker, played by Amy Adams, who returns to her small hometown of Wind Gap to cover the murders of two preteen girls. Trying to put together a psychological puzzle from her past, she finds herself identifying with the young victims a bit too closely.Co-stars include Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Elizabeth Perkins and Matt Craven. If ‘Sharp Objects’ is a hit, and all indications are that it will be, film crews will be back here to work on season two and beyond.
