#7 Trojans break Mustangs; host Alcovy Friday

The Lamar County Trojans moved up to #7 in the GHSFD composite rankings after their win last week over Ola. The Trojans host the Alcovy Tigers this week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Trojan Field. The Trojans showed no aftereffects from the debacle at Mary Persons a week earlier as they scored twice in the first two minutes Friday night at Ola. A pitched battle ensued but the Trojans dominated the second half en route to a 41-27 win over the Mustangs. The Lamar coaches and administrators learned before the game that GHSA had stuck by its officiating crew and awarded a win to MP in the lightning halted game Sept. 12. It was the first regular season loss ever for the current LC senior class and the Trojans played with a chips on their shoulders. LC’s Noah Eure scored on a 51 yard run when the game was but 18 seconds old. The PAT attempt failed. Lamar scored again 89 seconds later. Micah Banks recovered a fumble by Ola’s kick return team. Shortly thereafter, L.J. Smith scored on a 10-yard run. Again the PAT failed and Lamar was up 12-0. In another 20 seconds, Ola scored on a 70-yard run and hit the PAT to make it 12-7. On their next drive, the Mustangs got a 34-yard field goal to make it 12-10. On the first play of the second period, Ola dialed up a halfback pass for a 39-yard touchdown. The successful PAT gave them their first lead at 17-12. It didn’t last long as, just 30 seconds later, Smith broke loose on a 53-yard scoring run. Again, the PAT failed and Lamar led 18-17. The Mustangs got another 34-yard field goal at the 5:47 mark of the second period to take a 20-18 lead but Lamar answered with 25 seconds left in the half. Fullback Juan Tucker blasted into the end zone from five yards out. Eure hit Banks with a pass for the two-pointer and the Trojans 26-20 lead into the locker room at the half. The score was set up by a 49-yard completion from Smith to Banks and the Trojans never trailed again. The Trojans got another TD from Tucker on a three-yard run in the third period. Smith ran in for the two-pointer and it was 34-20. The Mustangs responded with a scoring drive to cut it to 34-27 but, as was the case at MP, Lamar was the better conditioned team. Tucker got his third TD of the night late in the fourth on a 14-yard run. Dawson Davis split the uprights to make it 41-27. Eure led Lamar with 10 carries for 144 yards and a TD. Tucker had 115 yards on 14 carries and three scores. Andruw O’Neal carried four times for four yards. Smith was one for three passing for 52 yards with no picks. He ran for 67 yards on four carries, scoring two touchdowns and converting one PAT. Banks had two catches for 52 yards. The Trojans racked up 310 rushing yards and 52 passing yards for 362 yards of total offense. They had 11 first downs, were penalized only three times for 20 yards and lost one fumble. This week, the Trojans (2-1-1) host Alcovy. The Tigers (0-4), who play in Region 2-AAAAAA, have losses to Eastside (36-6), Baldwin (30-0), Pebblebrook (7-6) and Tift County (42-7). Trojan head coach Jamie Abrams is cautioning his team not to look at the Tiger’s record. ’We are preaching to the kids not to let their record fool them. They are a big, physical team with a lot of really good athletes. They just haven’t had some things go their way this year,’ the coach concluded.
