Several ceremonies were planned for 9/11,Patriot Day, to honor the heroes an victims of the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001 but were cancelled due to weather brought by Hurricane Irma. A planned flag raising ceremony at the Lamar County courthouse was cancelled Friday. The county planned to raise a ‘˜Holiday Ensign’ flag at the Lamar County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning. The ensign was donated by retired U.S. Navy Capt. Dan Rainey of Barnesville. It was flown on the USS Savannah when Capt. Rainey commanded the vessel.County chairman, Charles Glass said the county expected high winds and rain Monday morning and said the county does not want to damage the flag.The flag will be raised at a later date which has not been determined. The local Woodmen Life chapter has also cancelled a remembrance and flagpole dedication set for noon Monday. JROTC from Lamar County were expected to participate but will not be able due to the cancellation of Lamar County schools on Monday. The flagpole dedication has been rescheduled for noon on Sept. 20 at the civic center.
