Stalwart Trojan Willie Hamm succumbs

Willie Hamm died Friday at Wellstar Spalding in Griffin after a long battle with cancer.

Arrangements are subject to change but visitation is currently set for 5:30-7 p.m. tonight at the Fine Arts Center. The funeral will be held at the FAC Tuesday at 12 noon.

Commission okays purchase of patrol cars

At a called meeting Jan. 19, the Lamar County commission approved the purchase of three new patrol cars for the sheriff’s department. The cars are Dodge Chargers with 5.7 Liter V8 Hemi engines.


The cars retail at $45,935 per unit. The county is paying $38,000 through fleet and government discounts. The total bill of $114,000 will be paid using SPLOST funds.

The low bidder for the purchases was Ginn Commercial.

County commission to hold retreat in Athens

The Lamar County commission is off to the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at UGA for a board retreat. Meetings there are set for Thursday and Friday.

Items on the agenda are planning and strategy for the next four years and focusing on departmental reports.

Local man killed in Savannah crash

A local man was among two killed Thursday night when a truck ran into a building in Chatham County. He has been identified as Gage Gaskin.

A preliminary report indicated the truck, a Ford F-150, sideswiped a Nissan Altima while both vehicles were northbound on Ogeechee Road. The truck left the road and hit a commercial building.

The passenger in the truck was dead at the scene. The driver was taken to a hospital but later died.
