Wellmaker’s alleged killers will be tried as adults

At a hearing held Tuesday morning in Monroe County, Judge Tommy Wilson ruled the two juveniles charged with the murder of CJ Wellmaker here Sunday will be tried as adults.

That ruling opens up their files under Georgia law and we have requested their booking information and mugshots. Reportedly, one assailant is from Milner and the other from Griffin.

Additionally, the GBI has corrected its news release to report Wellmaker was standing in the yard of a home when the two assailants drove by and shot him. A previous release indicated Wellmaker was driving his killers.

GBI issues press release on Wellmaker murder

From Mary Chandler, special agent in charge, GBI:

Two juveniles are in custody, charged with felony murder following the death of a Barneseville man.

The Barnesville Police Department requested the GBI investigate the death of Hakim Wellmaker, age 17, on Sunday, September 24, 203, at about 7:15 p.m.  At about 6:25 p.m., the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office 911 center received a call about a man with a gunshot wound on Matthews Street in Barnesville, Georgia.  When deputies and officers arrived, they discovered Wellmaker shot multiple times.
