In a single night, both the Lamar board of education and the county commission approved a Quality Zone Academy Bond issuance that will help put a wing on the high school to house the new College Career Academy charter school. The bond itself had been purchased that morning, Dec. 20, by United Bank with an interest rate of 4.4%, beating out numerous larger banks in a flurry of bidding. However, since the interest over the next 12 years will be paid with federal stimulus dollars, the QZAB is essentially a zero-interest bond.
