Advance voting underway

By Rachel McDaniel Around 100 Lamar County voters cast their vote in the first week of advance voting for the March 1 Presidential Preferential Primary. Advance voting will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 and 1:30 to 5 p.m. through Feb. 26, with a day of Saturday voting offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 20. Anita Reid has worked in the Lamar County Elections Office for 12 years and encourages citizens to stop by and cast their ballot. ’If you don’t want to stand in line on election day, then early voting is the best place to be,’ she said, noting that voters can usually get checked in and vote in five minutes or less. ‘If you can’t make it to the office during the week, we’d like to see you Saturday, Feb. 20.’ She said 43 absentee ballots have been mailed out and seven have already been returned. All absentee ballots must be returned to the elections office by Election Day -March 1. Names on the two party ballots for the March 1 election include Democrats Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley, Bernie Sanders and Michael Steinberg; and Republicans Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Lindsey Graham, Mike Huckabee, John R. Kasich, George Pataki, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum and Donald J. Trump.
