AG keynotes meth summit Tuesday

The Lamar County sheriff’s office is spearheading a multi-agency effort to present a methamphetamine summit here June 2. The event will be held at the Lamar County Middle School gym beginning at 8:30 a.m. ’This summit represents the work of many who see the physical, social, economic and criminal justice costs of the drug on a daily basis,’ sheriff Larry Waller said. The GBI bomb squad and local firefighters will demonstrate the dangers of fire and explosions associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine. There will also be exhibits on the environmental dangers of meth making and the costs of clean-up. Summit speakers and displays will make endeavor to teach residents what to look for when they suspect a meth lab or meth users are in their neighborhood. ‘We will have a mock-up lab so citizens will know what one looks and smells like when they run across it,’ Waller added. Mothers Against Meth members will also offer personal perspectives on the impacts of the drug on the family. Georgia attorney general Thurbert Baker will deliver the keynote address at the summit.
