Akins, who has worked full time in the family business since returning to Barnesville after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1972, was surrounded by family and well-wishers at the banquet. Akins lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track for all four of his years at Gordon Military High School. He attended Gordon Military College on a football and baseball scholarship before transferring to UGA. Long active in his church, First Baptist, Akins was named a life deacon in 2014.
