The event was hosted by co-chairs Bill Lindsey and Rev. Garth Forster. Akins, who has worked full time in the family business since returning to Barnesville after graduating from the University of Georgia in 1972, was surrounded by family and well-wishers at the banquet. Akins lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track for all four of his years at Gordon Military High School. He attended Gordon Military College on a football and baseball scholarship before transferring to UGA. Long active in his church, First Baptist, Akins was named a life deacon in 2014. In 2015, he was selected as citizen of the year. In his remarks, Akins deflected credit from himself and lauded the sponsors and leaders who have built and maintained the local scouting program. ‘It is amazing how many Eagle scouts we turn out here,’ Akins said.
