Alleged shooter makes first court appearance

Alleged killer Ronald Eugene Smith made his first court appearance Feb. 1 before chief magistrate William Thomas and was bound over to superior court without bond on one count of malice murder. (video of the appearance after the jump) Smith, dressed in jail-issue orange coveralls and shower shoes, appeared in court shackled at his wrists and ankles. Fidgeting constantly and offering only ‘Sir, yes, sir’ and ‘Sir, no, sir’ responses to Judge Thomas’ questioning, Smith came across as distracted and indifferent. Smith is charged with murder in the shooting death of his neighbor, 56-year-old Charles G. Adams. Adams was shot dead in the doorway of his home at 488 Grove Street in the early morning hours January 29.
