Altercation causes wreck, arrests

A 34-year-old Barnesville man was arrested and charged with battery (family violence) and other crimes after he allegedly caused a one-vehicle wreck after he punched the driver on June 14. At about 9:30 a.m., Monroe County deputy Yasmen Brandenburg went to Hwy. 341 North about a one-vehicle wreck. The female driver (Sequia Sparrow) said she was traveling north on Hwy. 341 when she lost control of her vehicle and ran into the ditch. Brandenburg noticed a very strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The driver told Brandenburg she was not able to tell him exactly what had happened because her male passenger (Jared Clay Smith) was still inside the vehicle. The passenger was very intoxicated and did not know what had happened. When Monroe County EMTs removed the passenger from the vehicle, the passenger opened a can of beer and started to drink it. Brandenburg then took the beer away from the passenger. Once the driver was separated from the passenger she told Brandenburg that the passenger had punched her in the face causing her to lose control of the vehicle. The driver said the punch caused a preexisting cut over her eye to reopen. The driver said she was afraid of the passenger and did not want him to know she told Brandenburg what had happened. She said the passenger had just been released from the Lamar County Jail the previous day. Monroe County EMTs treated both the driver and the passenger before they were each taken to Monroe County Hospital. The driver was also charged with reckless conduct, failure to wear seat belt, an open container violation, passenger interfering with driver control and obstruction. -Monroe County Reporter
