It’s November, the time of year when football games take on extra significance as teams jockey for playoff seeding and championships. Players are usually more focused and more intense and it shows on the field of play.
My football weekend began Friday night at Trojan Field in Barnesville where Lamar County hosted the Claxton Tigers in a first round playoff game. Lamar and Claxton had never played each other before but I have been to Claxton’s stadium..
Montgomery County, my alma mater, played Claxton at their unique stadium known as The Pecan Grove. There, pecan trees actually grow up through the stands. It is very unique and somewhat like playing in a park.
I learned Friday night that the Tigers are building a new stadium but The Pecan Grove will be preserved for use as a soccer stadium.
After a slow start, Lamar jumped on the Tigers, building a 42-7 lead in a game that ended 42-21. Lamar hosts #10 Bleckley County this week in round two of the playoffs.
There were many entertaining college games Saturday afternoon before Georgia and Mississippi State hooked up at 7 p.m. The big question was whether the Dawgs would have a letdown after stomping a mud hole in the #1 Tennessee Volunteers 27-13 the week before in a game that was not as close as the score indicated.
The Vols came in leading the nation in scoring and did not find the end zone against the Dawgs until the 4:15 mark of the fourth period. Heavy rain started to fall in the second half and Kirby Smart was glad to run clock with a 24-6 lead. I have no doubt offensive coordinator Todd Monken could have hung 40 plus on the Vols on a clear day with a dry football.
In Starkville, he did just that as UGA dominated the other Bulldogs 45-19.
As written earlier in this space, Alabama is way down from its usual level of dominance. With two losses, they are out of the SEC West race. The Tide face Austin Peay this week then host Auburn in the Iron Bowl. I have a feeling Auburn rallies to win that game and interim coach Cadillac Williams gets that job.
Meanwhile, he Dawgs are undefeated at 10-0 with Kentucky and Georgia Tech left on the schedule.
They have clinched the SEC East and will play LSU in the SEC championship game. They will be heavy favorites in all those games.
It is great time of year for football and it is a fabulous time to be a Dawg!
