Animal shelter named for longtime advocate Fred Morris

Construction has yet to begin on the long-awaited animal shelter, the lone unfinished project from the 2017 SPLOST, but the facility has now been officially named.

The county commission approved the shelter name at its regular meeting Feb. 20. It will be called the Lamar County Animal Shelter and Morris Adoption Center in honor of longtime animal advocate Fred Morris who has led the drive for a new shelter for decades.

“My friend Fred has worked tirelessly on the animal shelter project,” commission chairman Ryran Traylor said.

Morris could not attend the meeting due to health concerns but spoke remotely.

“This facility will be world class. People should remember that animal shelters are not for animals, they are for communities,” Morris said.

After multiple delays, a construction start date for the shelter is nearing. Wright Woodall of Flint Building Company is receiving a final few bids for the project, county administrator Sean Townsend said.
