Another commercial construction project set for zoning hearing May 7

By Walter Geiger As reported in recent weeks, commercial activity is burgeoning along Veterans Parkway and a new location is now in the crosshairs of developers and headed for a zoning hearing. Donald R. Haywood is seeking to have his property at 934 Thomaston Street rezoned from R-1 (residential) to C-2 (highway commercial) to ‘˜allow a retail store or other C-2 use’. The property currently hosts a 1976 square foot ranch style house built in 1977 that was long the home and beauty shop of the late Vivian Haywood. The property comprises 1.2 acres and fronts on both Thomaston Street and the four-lane. Speculation is Burger King, which has long sought a spot on the four-lane, is interested in the site. The home will likely be demolished. The planning commission will hold a hearing on the matter on May 7 at 8:30 a.m. The county commission will take it under consideration May 15 and render a final decision at that time. Legal advertising on this process is published on page 6B of the 4.17.18 print edition of The Herald Gazette.
