Another fatality on Chapel Hill Road

A one-vehicle accident on Chapel Hill Road in the area of Ellis Circle resulted in yet another fatality, the fourth along the roadway in recent months. A Barnesville man was driving in the one-vehicle fatality and was the only occupant of the car. Sheriff Jimmy Thomas confirmed the fatality and said the crash occurred at approximately 9 p.m. Tuesday. More details will be released early Wednesday, the sheriff said. Pike coroner Terrell Moody arrived on the scene at about 9 p.m. According to deputy Maj. Doug Morris, Emmitt Rex Thompson, 39, of Barnesville, was driving a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix when it left the roadway and struck a tree shortly after a downpour. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Morris said speed could have been a factor in the wreck, but it is still under investigation.
