Area man injured in freak accident

A local man was lifeflighted from northeast Lamar County Thursday afternoon after a freak accident involving a racing lawnmower. Sheriff Brad White said details regarding the accident were still sketchy as it occurred during a time at which his deputies were answering multiple calls around the county. The man was hurt on Chappell Mill Road just southeast of its intersection with High Falls Road. It remains unclear if it occurred in Lamar or Butts, the sheriff said. Butts County deputies and emergency personnel were first on the scene and took command. “We let Butts County and the state patrol handle it because they got there first and we were out on multiple other calls,” the sheriff said. The victim was operating some sort of racing lawnmower and ran out of gas. A young couple came across him and offered help. A chain was attached to the lawnmower to tow it to the victim’s home. He was steering the mower when it flipped while being towed. Initial reports were the man suffered serious abdominal injuries and was unresponsive at the scene. A landing zone was set up at Rock Springs Church and the victim was lifeflighted to the trauma center at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. More to follow….
