Artists sought for paint out at BBQ & Blues

By Sherri Ellington Artists are being asked come to the Lamar Arts Paint Out in Barnesville, Saturday, April 27, and risk being on TV. ’The television show Pitmasters is going to film BBQ & Blues this April 27,’ said Lamar Arts member Eleanor Dixon Stecker. ‘This is the day of Lamar Arts Paint Out.’ In addition to possible TV exposure, the juried art competition has prizes ranging from $200 for first place, $100 for second place, $50 for third place to ribbons for honorable mentions. Judges will be Pam Preston and Dot Brown of Macon. ’We will be part of the television festivities. TV people like to do sidebars,’ said Stecker. ‘These are small stories surrounding the bigger story, so artists painting around the folks cooking is a big sidebar story. You may be lucky and have a story done about your painting.’ Artists should arrive at the Barnesville Depot at 8 to 9 a.m. to sign in. Their canvas or paper will be stamped and they will be given signs to place on their painting sites that will also contain an entr y number. Work will be produced on site. Entrants are encouraged to feature some aspect of BBQ & Blues and the community. Many porches of Lamar Arts members will be available for those who wish to paint Victorian homes on historic Thomaston Street. In case of bad weather, indoor locations will be provided. Tables will be available at the Depot where the work will be framed. Each artist should have an easel on which to exhibit finished works. Snacks and drinks will be provided at the Depot and transportation will be provided from the Depot to the judging site. Work will be judged at 3:30 p.m. at the BBQ & Blues stage area, after which the public is invited to view the art and meet the artists. ’Lamar Arts will feature all the work from the day of the Paint Out in a tent in the center of the festivities. Attendees will be encouraged to buy work,’ said Stecker. ‘We’ll use a bid sheet on each painting. This isn’t a fundraiser. The purchase price, minus Lamar Arts’ 20% commission, will go to the artists.’ A silent auction will be held from 4-5 p.m. to sell the art work. Bid winners will be announced after the barbecue awards. Artists will be asked to set a minimum price for their work. Artists will be paid within one week of the sale and will retain copyright to the work. ’Lamar Arts would like to have a large number of artists painting,’ she said. ‘It’s good for us and it’s great exposure for you.’ Artists can also offer prints at the Depot Gift Shop. Also, Lamar Arts will set up a system for selling paintings by taking VISA credit cards. The cost for artists to join is $30 by April 17 or $40 at the door.
