At least one contested race in Barnesville

There will be at least one contested municipal election in Barnesville in November.

Incumbent Ward 1 councilman Bill Claxton qualified for reelection Monday. Claxton also serves as mayor pro tem and is acting as mayor at present due to mayor Peters Banks being incapacitated by a heart attack.

On Tuesday, Christopher Deraney qualified to oppose Claxton in the Ward 1 race.

Kelly Hughes remains the only qualifier in the mayor’s race. Banks, who is improving rapidly at Sylvan Grove, is not seeking reelection.

UPDATE: Ward 3 incumbent councilman Sammie Shropshire qualified Tuesday. He has no opposition thus far.
