The 37th annual community awards banquet, hosted by the chamber of commerce, will be held Thursday at the SARC building on the Gordon State College campus beginning at 6:30 p.m. After an elaborate meal, multiple local awards will be presented. This event is sold out. The chamber sponsors three awards: volunteer of the year, businessperson of the year and citizen of the year. The nominees for volunteer of the year are Hedy Cauthen and Linda Akins; Ashley Gilles; and Donavan Sanford. The nominees for businessperson of the year are Chris Deraney; Krystal Haneline; Jimmy and Letha Henry; and Kristy and Joe Sims. The nominees for citizen of the year are Glen Allen, Andy Bush, Dr. E.H. Harris, Kim Ozier, Donavan Sanford. Other awards to be presented include career woman of the year, law enforcement officer of the year, firefighter of the year and STAR student and teacher. Nominees for law enforcement officer of the year are Michael Blankenship and Katherine Knapp. Also on the program is the induction of the Leadership Lamar Class of 2020.
