Barnesville native Tonya Johnson new executive director of human resources at Gordon

Gordon State College names Tonya Johnson as the Executive Director of Human Resources where she returns to Highlander Nation having previously served as Director of Human Resources and Payroll from 2010 to 2015.

Johnson’s career spans some 20 years encompassing leadership roles in policy development, human resources, payroll administration, employee relations, and performance management. In her new role, Johnson will serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet acting as the institution’s Chief Human Resources Officer overseeing all related functions for the College.

“I am honored and excited about the opportunity to contribute to the future success and growth of Gordon State College. I look forward to working collaboratively with President Green and the entire Gordon community in achieving both personal and collective success,” Johnson said. “This is a full circle moment to be able to return to the place where I started my career in the higher education sector over twenty years ago.” 

In addition to her time at GSC, Johnson has held positions at Georgia Department of Corrections, Georgia College and State University, and Fort Valley State University. She currently serves as the assistant director of human resources at Middle Georgia State University (MGA) where she works with employee relations, recruitment and orientation, and HR project implementation. 

A native of Barnesville, Johnson earned both a Bachelor of Science in business and information technology and a Master of Science in organizational management at MGA. She also completed leadership training through the TIAA Emerging Leadership Network (ELN) program.

“With her extensive expertise in Human Resources and her strong background in the University System of Georgia, Ms. Johnson is the perfect individual to spearhead the future of Human Resource Development at Gordon State,” said GSC President, Dr. Donald J. Green. “I eagerly anticipate her guidance as we work towards attracting exceptional talent to our College and providing the labor market with a pool of exceptional individuals.”

Johnson will assume her new position on March 1, 2024.
