The Honor Air flight earlier this spring which took World War II veterans to Washington to see the memorial erected in their honor has spun off a new event – Barnesville Remembers. Many veterans could not go on the Washington trip due to age, infirmities or other commitments. That led organizers Mark Stone and Kent Kingsley to host an event here at home for those who had to stay behind. It is set for Saturday, June 12 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Fine Arts Center.VFW auxiliary members are selling Buddy Poppies honoring vets. To purchase one, call June Hamrick at 770-358-0311 or Rubye Johnson at 770-358-0650.Barnesville Remembers begins at 10 a.m. with a reception for veterans and their families. At 10:30, Banks & Shane will perform patriotic music. At 11 a.m., the veterans tribute begins. A food court will open at 12:15 p.m and Banks & Shane will perform for the community at 12:45 p.m.The hope is to reach and invite all WWII vets in the area. If you know one or need more information, contact Kingsley at 770-358-2941.’This is going to be an event like Barnesville hasn’t seen – at least in a long time,’ Stone concluded.
