Barnesville to begin flushing, testing hydrants

Barnesville public works personnel will begin hydrant flushing and testing operations June 1. Testing will be done from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. on weekdays. Flow data will be collected. That data allows the city to maintain the best insurance rating possible for fire protection. ”This process is necessary to ensure properly functioning hydrants and water flow in the case of an emergency,” city manager Kenny Roberts said. The downside to the testing is water users may experience discolored water. This results from iron oxide that has accumulated in the distribution system. ”The city will make every effort to minimize inconveniences to our customers,” Roberts added. If you experience discoloration of your water, clear the pipes by running all water outlets, including your washing machine, for a few minutes until it is clear. If the discoloration persists for more than 24 hours, call city hall at 770-358-0181 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. If after hours service is needed, call the fire department line at 770-358-1246.
