Barnesville ward two voters go to the polls

Voters in Barnesville’s Ward 2 go to the polls Tuesday to choose between two candidates to fill the unexpired term of former city council member Annie Mae Harris who resigned last summer. Seeking the seat are former councilman Chris Hightower and Ronald Horton. Hightower is the son of longtime school board member Horace Hightower. Horton is the son of current county commissioner Bennie Horton. The polling place at the Barnesville Civic Center will be open from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. and elections officials are hoping election day voting is more robust that advance voting. As of noon Friday, only eight of the ward’s 643 active registered voters had bothered to cast advance ballots. Elections supervisor Anita Reid had mailed just one absentee ballot. The elections board will be running its first city election and, for the first time, city voters will use the new, touch screen voting terminals. When the polls close, the results will be tabulated in the main courtroom of the Lamar County courthouse. The victorious candidate will be back on the campaign trail soon. The term of office being contested ends December 31 and another vote for a full, four-year term will be held later.
