Barnesville’s first female mayor takes the reins

Kelly Hughes (seated) was sworn in as mayor of Barnesville in ceremonies held Dec. 29 at city hall. She is the first female to serve as mayor in the town’s history. Councilmen Bill Claxton and Sammie Shropshire were also sworn in after being reelected to their posts.

Supporting Hughes were (standing, l-r) Claxton, city clerk Tammy Folson, councilman Butch McDaniel, Shropshire and councilman Joe Sims. The first council meeting of the new year will be held Jan. 8.
