Bell scholarship application deadline approaching

The 2012 BBQ & Blues committee and the Dewaine T. Bell Difference Makers Organization will award the fifth annual scholarship in memory of the late Mayor Dewaine T. Bell. The Dewaine T. Bell Scholarship will be awarded to a Lamar County High School senior who has a passion for music and plans on attending college in fall 2012. The application deadline is April 6. The scholarship will be awarded Saturday, April 28 during the Saturday night blues concert at Ritz Park. The scholarship is paid for by festival sponsorships and memorial paper pig sales. These memorial cut out pigs will be available April 2 and displayed around town at local merchants for $1, $5 and $10. Immediately following the death of Mayor Bell, the committee met and discussed ways of honoring him through music, education and the school he loved most. Mayor Bell was a key factor in developing the BBQ & Blues Festival and it has grown leaps and bounds since it began in 2005. He wanted to bring people to downtown Barnesville to show off the town he called home. Applications are available at the high school main office, at the Chamber of Commerce office and on the Chamber of Commerce official BBQ & Blues site at For information call 770-358-5884.
