Benefits expire; unemployment rate falls

Over the past three months as federal jobless benefits ran out, Lamar County’s unemployment fell to 11.4% in April from 12.4% in March. It was 13.1% in February. It topped out at 16.2% in July 2009. In April Lamar County’s work force was 7,705 people, 6,826 working and 879 seeking work or getting unemployment benefits. The numbers were 7,735 in April 2009, with 7,024 working and 978 out of work. At that time the jobless percentage was 12.2%. Lamar’s work force numbered 7,748 people in March, with 6,784 working and 964 seeking jobs. In February, the numbers were 7,754 total people, 6,735 working and 1,019 seeking work. Joblessness was 10.6% in March 2009, when there were 7,879 people in the job market, 7,040 working and 839 seeking work.
