Big changes with local funeral homes; O’Reilly, BK coming here?

By Walter Geiger Barnesville will soon have one less funeral home as big changes are coming with two of the existing operations Breedlove Memorial Chapel and Williams Funeral Home. Joe Westbury, who owns the funeral home bearing his name in Jackson, is combining the two local parlors. The deal closed Tuesday. Westbury, 42, has spent 22 years in the funeral home business, most recently with Sherrell-Westbury in Jackson and Conner-Westbury in Griffin. He is a member of the board of the Georgia Board of Funeral Service, having been appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal. ’I am buying the business of Williams and the business and location at Breedlove. We will operate under the name Williams-Westbury Funeral Home at the current Breedlove location. Our chapel will continue to carry the Breedlove Memorial name,’ Westbury reported Friday. ’We work about 100 calls a year in Jackson and Barnesville is about the same. I expect to spend a little more than half my time in Barnesville,’ Westbury added. Westbury reported it is his understanding the Williams real estate on Rose Avenue is under contract and will be developed commercially, a rumor that has circulated in the local business community for months. The most often mentioned names in connection with that site are O’Reilly Auto Parts and Burger King but nothing is yet official on those transactions.
