Lamar County commissioners held the first reading of an upcoming blight tax, called a Community Redevelopment Tax, to become a new section of the county code. It will raise ad valorem taxes by a factor of six on unoccupied property that is deemed blighted.If the property is repaired and passes inspection, the owners will benefit from a lowering of the original property taxes by a factor of .5 a year for each $25,000 in repair costs for up to four years.
