Bluesman Guy Davis coming to Gordon

World-renowned musician, storyteller, and actor Guy Davis will be the featured guest of the 2014 Gordon State College President’s Speaker Series. The event will take place on Monday, March 3, at 2 p.m. on the stage of the Gordon State College Fine Arts Theatre. The community is invited to attend the free event. Davis, son of the late actor Ossie Davis and the Oscar-nominated actress Ruby Dee, has carved a place for himself as a major figure in American folk, jazz, and blues music. His performances on the stage and on screen where he appeared on ‘Law and Order’ and ‘One Life to Life’ have won widespread acclaim. This is Davis’ second visit to campus. In 2012 he staged his one-man play, ‘The Adventures of Fishy Waters: In Bed with the Blues.’ This time, audience members will have the opportunity for a more intimate experience. Davis, sitting on stage with Gordon students, will share his thoughts on a life and time that intersected major events and figures of the American cultural scene, from his famous parents to the dear friend with whom he sometimes shared a stage, the late Pete Seeger. ”We’ve been fortunate, over the run of the President’s Speaker Series, to revisit history through the eyes of our speakers. In the process they created history here at Gordon State College,” said Marc Muneal, assistant professor of English and chair of the President’s Committee on College Culture. “With Mr. Davis’ participation this year, we have another opportunity to do just that. And we celebrate art, music, and culture by celebrating his amazing talent.” Davis will also perform in a one-night-only concert that same evening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the evening concert are $7 for adults, $6 seniors, $5 for non-Gordon students and $4 each for members of a group of 10 or more.
