Bobby Caldwell

Mr. Robert ‘Bobby’ J. Caldwell, 87, of Barnesville, passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at his home. He was born May 25, 1927 in Lamar County, son of the late J.D. Sr. and Bessie Harrell Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church in Upson County for more than 60 years, 57 of which he served as a deacon or head of the board of deacons. He worked all of his life as a farmer, raising chickens, beef cattle and supplying fresh produce to numerous grocery stores in five surrounding counties. Mr. Caldwell was formerly employed by the William Carter Company. He was a lifetime board member of Lamar County Farm Bureau, and was Farmer of the Year in 1986. He served in the United States Army during World War II in occupied Japan. Mr. Caldwell enjoyed playing bridge and began playing golf at the age of 60 and had six holes in one at the Deer Trail Country Club. He also loved aviation and enjoyed watching the sky divers at the Thomaston Airport. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Margie Elizabeth Maynard Caldwell; and a brother, J.D. Caldwell, Jr. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Julie Sykes and Dale Meeler of Griffin, Lynda and Mike Brutz of Barnesville and Becki and Tim Brown of Griffin; grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Cali Brutz, Mary Catherine and Douglas Tuttle, Jamey Elizabeth Jones and her father Reggie Jones, Regina Jolley, Kirstin Brown and Jessica Brown; one great-grandchild, Logan Jolley; sister, Sara Brewster; sister-in-law, Betty Maynard; and a special friend, Bernice Timmons. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church in Upson County with Rev. Jeffrey Morgan and Danny Caldwell officiating. The family received friends following the service in the fellowship hall. The interment was private. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that contributions be made in memory of Mr. Robert ‘Bobby’ J. Caldwell to the Antioch Baptist Church, 2269 Yatesville Barnesville Rd., Yatesville, Ga., 30197; or to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, 505 Water Works Rd., Palmetto, Ga., 30268.
