Bond denied for man who opened fire on deputies

By Walter Geiger Bond was denied and a mental evaluation ordered for Tyler Pitts Thursday in Lamar superior court. Judge Bill Fears denied bond after a hearing dominated by testimony from GBI agent David Peebles. Pitts, who was wanted on aggravated stalking warrants out of Upson County, led officers on a high speed chase that began on Freeman Road and ended on O’Neil Street behind LCHS here Sept. 8. He opened fire with a .45 caliber Glock on his pursuers who returned fire. He was wounded several times and flown to the Macon Medical Center where he acquired a pair of surgical scissors and cut his own throat. He survived the suicide attempt and has been held in Macon since that time. He is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Agent Peebles testified he was called in by sheriff Brad White to work an officer-involved shooting. He testified Pitts had, in the days before the incident, threatened to kill his ex-wife who had had a temporary protection order taken out on him. Peebles testified Pitts had told others he was not going back to jail and would take out as many cops as he could. Pitts also told officers after the shooting that he wanted to die, Peebles said. Public defender Elna Reese asked Peebles if Pitts fired into the air. Peebles responded that several law enforcement vehicles were struck by rounds fired by Pitts. Assistant district attorney Mark Daniel noted Pitts has a ‘lengthy criminal history’ and asked the judge to set a multi-million dollar bond if he set one at all. Statutes call for a bond to be set if Pitts is not indicted within 90 days of his arrest. The next grand jury convenes on Dec. 12. In the meantime, Judge Fears denied bond and ordered that a mental evaluation be done on Pitts now in order to save time later.
