Boys and Girls Club construction fast tracked

Barring unforeseen circumstances, at-risk children in Barnesville-Lamar County will have access to a Boys & Girls Club by early next year. At a steering committee meeting June 11, it was announced the opening date for the club is Jan. 13, 2020. The Barnesville city council has committed to constructing a new 4000-square foot building for the club and earmarked up to $75,000 for the facility. The school system is providing a site in the rear of the parking lot on the LCES campus across Roberta Drive from the bus shop. The club will affiliate with Boys & Girls Club of North Central Georgia based in Madison. Its president, Bob Mackey, is heavily involved in the planning and implementation of the local club. Mackey and others toured the soon-to-be-demolished high school campus, selecting items that could be used in the new club facility. Those items included desks, tables and shelving from the front lobby area of the current high school. City crews have moved furniture into storage and will get more this week. A comprehensive fundraising effort of behalf of the club will begin in September and will be chaired by Chuck and Kim Bankston.
