Brown appointed to Board of Assessors

The Lamar County commission voted unanimously July 14 to appoint Aaron Brown to fill the unexpired term of James Butler on the Board of Assessors. The appointment was added to the agenda at the request of commissioner Bennie Horton. After some discussion regarding citizens serving multiple appointments, Brown agreed to resign immediately from the Board of Elections and the planning commission in order to take the tax assessors spot. ”I don’t want one person appointed to multiple boards. The potential is there for conflicts. In particular, elections board members should be completely neutral and serve on nothing else,” chairman Jay Matthews opined. In other business, the commission set a called meeting for July 28 at 6 p.m. to set the millage rate.
