Burns investiture set for November 9

Max Burns will be invested as President of Gordon State College in a special ceremony Friday, Nov. 9 in the Fine Arts Theatre on campus. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m. A reception will follow on the ground floor of the Nursing and Allied Health Sciences building on the west side of campus. Guest speakers for the ceremony will include Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, Hank Huckaby; Barnesville City Council member Ann Claxton; President of Armstrong Atlantic State University, Linda Bleicken; Gordon President Emeritus Lawrence Weill and USG Regent Tommy Hopkins, among others. The public is invited to attend. Burns is the third president of the College since it joined the University System of Georgia in 1972. He was preceded by Jerry Williamson who served from 1972 to 2001 and Lawrence Weill who served from 2002 to 2010. Burns began his tenure at Gordon State College in January 2012. Prior to Gordon, Burns served as Dean of the Mike Cottrell School of Business at North Georgia College & State University. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Georgia’s 12th Congressional District. Prior to his service in Washington, Burns was a Professor of Management in the College of Business Administration at Georgia Southern University. Burns holds a Ph.D. in business administration and a master’s of business information systems from Georgia State University. Additionally, he earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Burns and his wife Lora have two sons, a grandson and a granddaughter.
