Busy sports week for Trojans

For reprint permission, e-mail news@barnesville.com. *************** The Trojan basketball team begins defense of the Region 4-AA championship when they open tournament play at Morgan County in Madison as the number two seed. They will play seventh seed Crawford County Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. The winner earns a berth in the state playoffs and advances to the semi-finals to face Putnam County or Monticello. The Lamar boys, 17-8 overall, closed the regular season with wins over Jackson, Greene County and Monticello. The Lady Trojans hosted Crawford County Monday night in the tournament play-in game. The winner faces top seed and fourth ranked Morgan County tonight in Madison. The winner plays either Southwest Macon or Pike County Friday at 7 p.m. The Lamar soccer teams open their season hosting the sixth annual Trojan Cup tournament. Lamar will host Callaway Thursday at Trojan Field beginning with the girls game at 5:30 p.m. Peach County and Rutland will play Friday night. The tournament continues Saturday with Lamar playing Peach County at 9 a.m. and Rutland at 4 p.m. at Trojan Field. Callaway plays Rutland at 9 a.m. and Peach County at 2 p.m. at the Trojan Athletic Complex behind the middle school. Lamar hosted Woodland for pre-season scrimmages last week with the Lady Trojans falling 3-2 while the Trojans lost 7-2. Trojan grapplers Tyler Redding and Lance Austin will represent Lamar County at the state wrestling finals at the Gwinnett Arena this weekend. Redding placed fourth in his weight division while Austin finished eighth at the sectional meet in Dublin to qualify for the finals. Lamar tennis teams opened play last week with matches against Mary Persons and Alcovy. The Trojans edged out both opponents by identical 3-2 scores while the girls fell to MP 5-0 and Alcovy 4-1. The tennis teams will host Spalding Thursday at the Trojan Athletic Complex courts. Baseball fans can get a preview of the 2012 Diamond Trojans as they host MP for a pre-season scrimmage Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Aldora Field. Lamar opens the regular season next Tuesday against Georgia Military in Milledgeville.
