Officials are warning citizens of a Canadian check scam that has been reported in the area. Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart warns anyone who receives mail from Canada containing a letter and check from Sun Life Trust or Sun Life Financial Trust that it is part of a scam. Stewart said the letter will say the recipient won money and the enclosed check was sent for for tax purposes. The letter will direct the recipient to cash the check and send some of the money back. ”The checks are no good and if you fall prey to this scam you will be out the money that you send to them because the check will be returned to the bank,” said Stewart. “The letter will also direct you to call a number that is listed. This number is usually an international number and when you call that number you will pay international prices for that call.”
