School bus, truck collide; no injuries

A Lamar County school bus collided with a red compact pickup truck early Monday morning. There were nine middle school students and a driver on the bus when the crash occurred in front of the high school at 6:54 a.m.

They and the female driver of the truck were assessed and no injuries were reported.

Christmas at the Ritz event on tap

The newly revived Barnesville Downtown Development Authority will host ‘Christmas at the Ritz’ at Ritz Park downtown Dec. 10.

The holiday marketplace will be open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and vendors are being sought.

The Christmas parade will follow that evening at 6:30 p.m.

Illumination Celebration kicks off holiday season Wednesday

The annual Illumination Celebration will formally usher in the holiday season Wednesday night with an array of activities on tap in downtown Barnesville.

The evening begins with the community worship service at First United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. Gordon president Dr. Kirk Nooks, assistant school superintendent Dr. Johnathan Roberts and various area pastors will lead the worship. Rev. Ann Mann will offer a Thanksgiving message.

A community choir will provide music. If you would like to sing, meet in the Stafford Room at the church at 5:30 p.m.

Downtown events begin at 7:30 p.m. with acting Barnesvillle police chief Belinda Penamon serving as emcee. The southbound lane of Main Street will be closed at 4 p.m. The northbound lane will be shutdown at 6 p.m.

Mayor Peter Banks will welcome the crowd and Rev. Andy Cook will give the opening prayer. The Rockettes from Ozier School of Dance will perform and Ryran Traylor will read ‘The Christmas Story’.

Tonya Walker will sing ‘O Holy Night’ and then the trees will be illuminated. Santa Claus will arrive via a tricked out Jeep and make his way to The Sims Team office where he will hear wish lists and take photos with the kids.

The Lamar County Trojans (10-2) lost to the Bleckley County Royals (10-2) in the Sweet 16 round of the GHSA Class A, Div. I state football playoffs here Friday night.
