By Diana NewCatherine Willis will perform an organ concert at the First Baptist Church Saturday, June 11 from 2-2:30 p.m. for the Georgia Trust’s Expedition in Barnesville.Willis is the organist and pianist for Barnesville’s First Baptist Church as well as the accompanist for Griffin Choral Arts. ‘I’m really looking forward to this performance,’ said Willis. ‘I am normally accompanying other musicians or singers, but this time I will be performing solo.’After gaining a fascination with the organ in high school, Willis began taking lessons from First Baptist Church’s Grace Scholl. Willis also had the opportunity to study organ for four years in Singapore. ‘I was really drawn to the organ’s versatility and wide variety of sound,’ Willis reflected.’Having been able to study in Singapore was such a great experience. I had the opportunity to study under an incredible instructor who encouraged the exploration of the organ’s sound.’Willis has accompanied a variety of choral groups and has even performed with a group at Spivey Hall. When she is not accompanying performances, Willis works as a real estate agent for Dora Cox Realty. She also teaches piano. At her performance Saturday, Willis hopes to demonstrate the organ’s versatility by performing a wide variety of songs including music from popular, classical and sacred artists.
