Celebrate freedom with fireworks

If you want to take in the rockets’ red glare to celebrate this Independence Day, there are several options though many take place this weekend. On Saturday, The Rock Ranch will host what it bills as the largest fireworks show in the southeast at sundown. The ranch opens at 2 p.m. with a wide array of activities for adults and kids including zip lines, rock climbing, etc. Daytime admission is $13 per person plus tax and some attractions require additional fees. Fireworks will also be the highlight of the Pride of Pike celebration at the soccer complex in Zebulon beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is $5 per vehicle. Entertainment will headlined by American Idol contestant Isaac Streetman. Riley Atha will perform and sing the National Anthem before the fireworks show. On Sunday, the spotlight shifts to Rock Springs Church where the annual Independence Day celebration and picnic will be held. Veterans of the Persian Gulf wars will be honored at morning worship services, according to pastor Dr. Bennie Tate. Entertainment will include Jase Robertson of ‘˜Duck Dynasty’ and recording stars John Michael Montgomery and Jo Dee Messina. Admission is free with a donation of canned goods. VFW Post 6542 on Old Hwy. 41 will host the only local fireworks display on the actual holiday, Wednesday, July 4. Events kickoff at 9 a.m. with a series of fundraisers for local legend Stan ‘˜Hambone’ Hamrick who is locked in a fierce battle with cancer, according to his father post commander Junior Hamrick. A poker run is among those events. Riders are asked to pony up $10 per bike and $5 per passenger. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with kick stands up at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be served for a donation. There will be a cake walk, dart poker, and a casting contest with live music all day.
