Charlie Joseph Powell

Charlie Joseph Powell, age 93 of Barnesville, GA died peacefully Monday, December 28, 2015 at Spalding Regional Hospital. Mr. Powell was a retired veteran of the Army, the Army Air Force, and the Air Force with 26 years of service. He served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. Mr. Powell was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church in Milner. He was born June 4, 1922 in New Hope, GA to the late Joseph William and Minnie Brinkley Powell. Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Gladys Gaffney Powell; a brother & sister-in-law, Johnnie Edward & Gaynelle Powell; and a brother, Roy Powell. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Betty Jarrell Powell; his children, Mary Frances (Paul) Corley of Rockvale, TN, Shirley (Bobby) Mickle of Barnesville, and Roy (Deborah) Powell of Gallatin, TN; five grandchildren, Jimmy (Christy) Trueluck, Matthew (Lisa) Corley, Reasa (Joshua) Thibodeaux, Joseph Powell and Katie Powell; and seven great-grandchildren, Joseph, Joshua and Jeremiah Trueluck, Barron and Blaine Corley, and Joshua and Michael Thibodeaux; three step-children, Karen (John) Smyser, Terri (Randy) Strait and Kelton Pennington. A funeral service for Charlie Joseph Powell will be held Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home. Rev. Swain Poole will officiate. Burial will follow in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Thursday from 12:00 ‘“ 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Youth Program, 161 Friendship Church Rd., Milner, GA 30257.
