Chase ends in crash here

By Walter Geiger A chase that originated on I-75 in Monroe County ended at the intersection of Hwy. 341 and MLK Drive in Barnesville Monday afternoon. Jerome Hayes III of Savannah was in one of two vehicles thought to be traveling together when the chase ensued. Hayes’ Toyota Camry was clocked at 115 mph on Hwy. 41 and 130 mph on MLK. He shot through the intersection at Hwy. 341, went airborne and landed in a driveway on the south side of 341. The second vehicle crashed on I-16 in Twiggs County. Drug trafficking is suspected. No drugs were found in Hayes’ car. Road- sides were being searched for drugs thrown from the car at presstime. Hayes was taken to the ER at Monroe County Hospital. He miraculously escaped serious injury. Additional information from Will Davis, publisher of the Monroe County Reporter: Monroe County deputies chased two fugitives at speeds of more than 125 mph on Monday until both wrecked, one in Twiggs County and one in Lamar County. Deputies began pursuing two vehicles, both with black male drivers, at around 1:45 p.m. when they were both clocked going more than 112 mph south on I-75 south near Pate Road . When the drivers realized they were being pursued, one sped up to 125 mph southbound into Bibb County and onto I-16 east. The other got off the interstate and took Hwy. 41 north to Barnesville. Bibb County deputies twice tried to use stop sticks on the first vehicle, a Chevy Camaro. The fugitive finally wrecked at the Bibb-Twiggs county line, coming to rest in the westbound lane on I-16. The driver ran about three miles into some woods but wound up in a subdivision where he was arrested by an off-duty Twiggs County deputy. He escaped again but was re-captured and was identified as Jamal Rashad Robinson, 20, of Savannah. He is wanted out of Chatham County on burglary charges and the Camaro had been reported stolen from Savannah as well. The second vehicle, a Toyota Camry, ran a stop sign at MLK Drive and the Hwy. 341 bypass in Barnesville and wrecked. That driver was identified as Jerome Hayes III, 26, of Savannah. Hayes’ Toyota Camry was clocked at 130 mph on MLK Drive in Barnesville. He shot through the intersection at Hwy. 341, went airborne and landed in a driveway on the south side of Hwy. 341.
