A local man has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole plus 10 years for killing a young girl who was his neighbor. Shane Clifton Collett, 42, was convicted by a jury on charges of malice murder, two counts felony murder, aggravated assault, first degree cruelty to children and concealing the death of another. The jury deliberated less than an hour Jan. 29 before finding Collett guilty in Spalding County superior court. Skylar disappeared after she left her home, utilizing through a shortcut through the woods, to get to a friend’s home on Dec.21, 2012. Her body was found the following day, dumped near an old logging deck in the woods off Yarbrough Mll Road in Spalding County. She was nine years old.
