City, county propose three-way swap

The Barnesville city council and the Lamar County commission are proposing a three-way swap to solve the ongoing debt crisis at the county water authority. Under the plan, Barnesville would take on the water authority operation and assume its debt. In return, the county would take over operation of the Barnesville-Lamar County Library. Thirdly, the city would deed to the county the land it owns upon which the county recreation complex and offices on Gordon Road are located. At the water authority meeting Monday night, general manager Amberly Ferris said the authority’s debt for 2011 has been covered. A joint city-county meeting on the matter has been set for June 28. It will take legislative action to dissolve the water authority.
