Coach Stephens a candidate at Camden?

By Walter Geiger When highly successful Camden County head football coach Jeff Herron announced last week he was taking the same job at Prince Avenue Christian in Athens, Franklin Stephens’ name immediately moved to the top of the list of possible candidates at Camden. Herron is 242-45 overall and went 158-18 at Camden where he won three state titles. Stephens is the most successful head coach among those who once worked as assistants under Herron and the Camden job is considered to be one of the best in Georgia. Rumors erupted Monday here that Stephens was leaving Lamar County where his team advanced to the state semifinals last season. While Stephens may be approached about the job he is not gone yet, according to school officials. ’There is a vacancy there (Camden) for sure. So far, I have had no confirmation as to an application or invitation and I have asked,’ school superintendent Dr. Bill Truby said. ’That is not true. He has not talked to them yet,’ LCCHS principal Derrick Austin added. A request for a statement from Stephens Monday morning met with no reply.
