Color run added to BBQ festival lineup

By Kay S. Pedrotti A 5K color run, a first for Barnesville, is planned for May 2 in conjunction with this year’s Battle of the Bones barbecue championship event. The run is called ‘˜The Color of the Pig’. What’s a color run? Runners will be showered along the race route with cornstarch powder dyed with food colors and emerge sporting beautiful rainbows, said Lauren Hooks, executive director of the Lamar County Family Connection Collaborative. The collaborative is working with the chamber of commerce on the run; proceeds will go to a new scholarship fund being started by the collaborative. Students who apply can receive supplementary funds for books, supplies and other needs as they head to college or tech school, Hooks said. ’The Jingle Bell Jog back in December was a big hit,’ Hooks said. ‘We had 53 runners helping us provide hot food for Christmas for five Lamar families. For this run we hope to have 100 runners ‘“ so many people have asked us to sponsor more running events here. It’s just one more way to have fun that day and a great way for the collaborative to keep working to give back to our community.’ The run will be from 9-11 a.m. on May 2 and will provide numbers and time-keeping for the participants. Some sponsors and volunteers are already on board but more are needed, said Hooks. ’The cornstarch powder is washable,’ she said. ‘It won’t dye anything except platinum blonde hair and that’s only temporary.’
