Commission to seek big tax hike

The Lamar County commission has set three public hearings on its proposal to increase property taxes by 11.33%. The county proposes a millage rate of 11.748 mills, an increase of 1.236 mills over last year. A property worth $100,000 would see a tax increase of $47.50. In a press release, commissioners wrote: Our expenses over the past several years have not increased dramatically. In fact, they are not increasing as fast as inflation despite some increases like health insurance costs, justice reform and taking over the Library from the City of Barnesville. During this time, some revenues declined and others have not grown enough to make up the difference. The public hearings will be conducted in the commission meeting room in the courthouse August 25 at 7 p.m.; August 28 at 9 a.m.; and September 1 at 9 a.m. For much more on this development, see the 8.18.15 print edition of The Herald Gazette.
