Despite dissension from citizens expressed during an hour long public hearing prior to their meeting Tuesday night, the Lamar County commission voted unanimously to approve a rock quarry on land near the intersection of Hwy. 41 South and Crawford Road.
The motion to approve was made by commissioner Bob Heiney and seconded by Bennie Horton.
The quarry still must go through a rigorous permitting process which will address water quality, air quality, traffic and other issues. The vast majority of the rock from this quarry will be transported by rail, company officials have said.
