A marathon budget meeting Thursday left the Lamar County commission studying massive cuts and a millage rate increase. The commission is reportedly considering a millage rate increase of one to one and a half mills and has reserved space in The Herald-Gazette for the next three weeks to advertise the increase.Despite the nearly $1 million in cuts hashed out Thursday, the county must raise the millage to service the debt on the tax anticipation note it is using to operate at present. The county millage rate hearing set for next week will be held as scheduled although no millage rate will be approved.
